A couple posts ago I wrote about losing my dearest love, my mother (thanks to all who shared kind words, prayers and well-wishes). What I didn't share, was that I was pregnant at the time...
There is an African proverb that Fela Kuti made into a song, which basically means, "water has no enemies." Fela used the saying to make a political statement, but the proverb can be used to describe anything or anyone that is too useful for you to live without. For those non-Africans, Andre 3000 once said, "you can't be mad at God." The truth is, my human frailty makes it natural for my faith to falter in this moment where God's decision has deeply disappointed me. But God is too useful for me to abandon. The same God with whom I was angry when I discovered my mother's demise, is the same God that I would plead with a few moments later to have mercy on her soul, forgive her sins and accept her into heaven. I can no longer care for her or be in her presence to give her company or comfort. All I have left, is hope that God will love her more than I ever could and give her rest in heaven.
Nigerian songstress Temi Dollface recently released a new collaboration album entitled Collectiv3, on which she released the song "School Your Face." The lyrics of the track hint at the game of poker face that people sometimes play when they are unsure of the intentions of a love interest. Temi teamed up with Amaka Osakwe, creative director of the women's fashion brand Maki Oh to design, style and shoot images that capture the essence of the song. Temi described the shoot as a take on traditional dolls such as those from Russia and Japan. View the full post to check out some of the photos and the music, below:

Hello all! As always, I appreciate you visiting the blog! My mind is constantly running free with new ideas for this platform, one of which is to feature some of the amazing people that I've had the pleasure to meet, in hopes that you may find as much inspiration in their story as I do. Since I was a child, I've always had an interest in having a dual career, which is how I describe a person who has a white-collar profession and also works in a creative field, or some other field of interest. But when I was a teenager, and I told people that I wanted to be both an attorney and a back up dancer for Janet Jackson, I was met with confusion and laughter, lol. This series is for all the young, or not so young, women who dare to dream of using all of the talents that they have while they are alive. Even if that means using them simultaneously...
"I felt a little bit of home once I was able to bond with a stranger to the melody of R&B songs playing over the muzak, perhaps another person would find comfort in the amazing flower arrays, the assortment of beer, or the hipster youth adorned in leather and skinny jeans. Whatever your flavor, Amsterdam has a little something for everyone.
It is unthinkable, that any law-abiding citizen of the United States of America could have their home raided by police in the middle of the night and that their life could be violently taken in an act of state sanctioned homicide. Continuing to allow these officers to escape accountability for their crimes undermines the integrity of your administration and perpetuates the system of lawlessness that allows officers to engage in police brutality. This type of lawlessness is a constant threat to the lives of the people in your state and across the nation.
Beyonce sent the internet, the media and middle America into a frenzy with her halftime performance at Superbowl 50 this past weekend. Although the superstar has said little about the performance aside from a backstage statement that she "wanted to make people feel proud," many people have come to their own conclusions about the meaning behind the performance, including quite a few negative interpretations.
